SATURDAY, 12 JULY 2008
Staff Captain: Captain Robert Camby     Chief Engineer: Ronnie Keir

FROM THE NAVIGATOR
TIME CHANGE
Please be reminded that early this morning the ship's time was ADVANCED ONE HOUR.
This will be repeated tomorrow and clocks will be ADVANCED ONE HOUR early on Sunday morning. Please advance your watches again before retiring this evening Saturday, 12 July.
NAVIGATION INFORMATION
During the morning we will transit the Faraday Fracture Zone which is part of the undersea volcanic mountain range known as the Mid Atlantic Ridge.
Discovered by coincidence in 1872 by scientists investigating the optimum route for a trans-Atlantic telegraph cable the Mid Atlantic Ridge forms a boundary between the North American plate and the Eurasian plate in the north Atlantic. It then extends from here and separates the African Plate from the South American plate in the southern Atlantic.
The Faraday fracture zone is only part of this vast undersea ridge and depths here range from 700 metres before dropping off again to over 4,000 metres once we have travelled over it.
SUNRISE AND SUNSET Sunrise: 5.58am / Sunset: 9.25pm
NAUTICAL FACT OF THE DAY
THE CUT OF YOUR JIB - If someone does not like the 'cut of your jib' then they may not like your general appearance or demeanour.
The jib of a sailing ship is a triangular sail set between the foretopmast head and the jib boom. Some ships had more than one jib sail. Each country had its own style of sail and so the nationality of a sailing ship, and a sailor's consequential opinion of it, could be determined from the jib.
